I had the privilege of speaking at OASIS, our church plant in West Salem, and what a GREAT work that God is doing there. It was my joy to see this new, healthy, growing BABY in action. New people and an exciting worship experience. YEA GOD! Let’s keep this group in our prayers. Thanks to Pastor Keith and Michele Ritter for their effective leadership.

UNANIMOUS VOTE given by the Church Board to build the NEW ADDITION. Here’s the bottom line summary shared yesterday by Pastor Jerry.

IN OTHER WORDS... WE'RE THERE!

These are ROUND numbers, but they give you a good feel for how it is we closed the gap on our goal. What can you do now? Thank the Lord for people who continue to step up and offer both cash and services. Thank the Lord for Dalke Construction's generous contribution. Ask the Lord to bring us more construction donations to help reduce the overall cost. If you have the means to invest, pray about helping the church through the purchase of lots or houses. And finally, thank God for lay leaders willing to grapple with issues such as these. We have a GREAT Church Board!

Can’t wait to see you SUNDAY!

What a great Lord’s Day at Salem 1st! We had 2 significant hours together and a chance to revisit WHO we are, and WHERE we’re headed.

We’ve been challenged to really pray and fast this week, asking God to do BIG THINGS for HIS Church.

We have a $1.3 million dollar need to be covered, which we named GOLIATH. Let’s take him down!

Once again I met a NUMBER of NEW PEOPLE who came through our doors! This never gets old.

I had a chance to PRAY WITH a variety of people about SPIRITUAL issues and needs. That never gets old!

Got off to a strong start in 1st hour with the new series YOU & ME, which is a walk through a section of the BOOK OF ACTS. It’s about DOING LIFE TOGETHER in the Kingdom. I believe that this study will really impact our Flock

On a personal note- would really ask you to pray for Jer and me as we carry some extra heavy burdens right now.

I sense we are on the verge of something great GOD WANTS TO DO, and I want to be a part of it. I’m thrilled to be included in Kingdom work.

I believe we are seeing THE CHURCH become more and more about what God wants it to become. We are BY NO MEANS perfect…but more and more I believe we are seeing Acts 2:42 begin to take place!

Don’t Forget – Let’s gather this Sunday and be prepared to give a devastating blow to the remaining need for this building. For those of you who may have missed the weekend, you can listen to both hours on the POD CAST.

It’s FALL. Are you in a small group or Sunday School class? Let me encourage you to do so. It’s how we DO LIFE TOGETHER, and there’s a great menu to choose from!

The 1st three Sunday Evenings of October we will be having my crazy uncle, Steven Fletcher, speaking on LAST DAYS LIVING. This 3-part series will be FANTASTIC. We’ll meet in the Lower Rickard and you’ll find this both challenging and insightful, not to mention, you’ll love Fletch.

I’m already looking forward to next Sunday. See you then.

Love,

Dave

I’ve got a few things on my heart I’d like to tell you about if you’ve got a few minutes. The first think is to ask you to not miss the SPECIAL ALL CHURCH MEETING this Sunday morning, and here’s why: You’ll be hearing brand new information about our building project regarding costs and projections, as well as progress with the city. You’ll also be hearing from several different people who have given much of their time in helping us to get this latest and most accurate information, and I know you’ll truly appreciate knowing exactly where things stand.

I can’t overemphasize the fact that this is a Defining Moment for us. We have some very important decisions to make that will have a direct impact on our future. You’ll be able to better respond once you have all the details.

The 9:15 service will be as usual – and it will be a great worship experience. Then, I’m asking all who attend the first hour to stay for coffee and cookies in the courtyard, and then gather together with the 11:00 crowd in the sanctuary. We will sing a few songs together, have some prayer, and then begin our information time.

Following the morning services there will be an All Church Lunch prepared for a very minimal cost. This is too important for us as a church to leave it up to everyone else. I’m asking each of you to dedicate yourself to attend this Sunday. In the meantime, please be lifting this important Sunday in your prayers.

For those who are looking for work, we continue to keep you in our prayers. Let me pass on to you a couple of pieces of information we’ve received that might be an avenue for employment.

1) The Kroc Center is getting ready to open and they are in the process of hiring people to fill the empty positions.

2) Jobs in the Valley. Apply online at www.crossmark.com.

This Friday ~ 9/11 ~ Beginning at 7:00 pm we will be hosting the live streaming of Joel Rosenberg’s Town Hall Meeting regarding “Inside the Revolution.” No cost.

Men’s Breakfast – This Saturday morning at 8:00 am. We will be having a great time together. I hope you’ll be there.

Let me close with a few SUNDAY REFLECTIONS…

- I’m really fired up about the possibilities that will come as a result of the First Church family seriously dedicating themselves to respond to the PROMPTINGS OF THE SPIRIT.

- We had a great holiday weekend with 2 more very strong services. God still shows up!

- I loved meeting brand new people who attended. Some came because of God’s leading, while others came because a friend invited them.

- I loved seeing the church family surround all of our students, teachers and school workers praying over them before they start school this week.

- “You don’t get bored following God’s heart, you get bored following your own.”

- The volunteers we have here at First Church continue to be AMAZING…so thankful that so many have embraced participation instead of being a spectator.

- By the way…Jesus didn’t change the world with spectators …but through people who knew enough about Him to be dangerous and were willing to do what they could with what they had for HIS name!!!

- AND…that’s still His plan!!!

- Next week we are doing something that we’ve never done…we are begging God to do amazing things!!!

- I’m truly stoked about the possibilities of our future. I can just sense that God is up to something really special for Salem First.

See you this Lord’s Day. COME EXPECTING SOMETHING GREAT!
The Beth Moore Weekend really set hearts on fire and it spilled over into Sunday! Thanks to all the ladies who attended and got your spiritual tanks filled.
THANK YOU to EVERYONE who attended this weekend because you got exposed to a fresh move of God!
We had the privilege of praying for MANY in the 2nd hour who need jobs, as well as those who are under great financial pressure. Watch God provide.
God is an incredible giver (John 3:16) who gives indescribable gifts (II Corinthians 9:15).
The reason the Gospel isn’t advancing as fast as it should be is NOT because of God…but because of LETHARGY among people who claim they are following Him.
I praise God that Salem 1st Church is a generous church…and in a time of recession the church has still committed to move forward and advance His Gospel.
For those who give…thank you…because of what you do financially God’s Kingdom IS being enlarged.
For those who get angry about conversations about money…it’s because your idol gets attacked. Money happens to be a really ugly god…trust me, I tried my hand at serving it…and it led to extreme debt and hopelessness.
I met a new guy yesterday named George. I asked him if he felt welcome and he said, “I felt more than that, I felt God!”
I watched many people step forward to give their hurts to God. My heart was deeply touched by peoples desire to connect with Him.
Salem 1st Family…I love serving as your pastor…can’t wait to see what happens next…God is on the move, the best is yet to come!! See you Sunday!
By the way, help me include as many as possible for our special ALL CHURCH BUILDING UPDATE on Sunday morning September 13th. It’s a DEFINING MOMENT and I need all of you there!

I wanted a chance to sit down and scratch out a note to you and just
talk about a few items that I think you’ll appreciate. I’m including
an additional update from Pastor Jerry.

1. The Goodness of our God – While Jer and I were away for a bit of vacation, I had a chance to really think, dream and contemplate. One of the things I was reminded of that I haven’t been able to get away from is the fantastic reminder about the goodness of our God. I know you don’t have to look very far to see needs and situations that are disheartening, but I’ve just got to tell you that in spite of the
situations and challenges that we all face, God is still good! Psalm
48 speaks about how Great the Lord is and so worthy of our praise. It speaks about God’s awesomeness and His unfailing love. So much so that even Mt. Zion rejoices. And then it closes with a fantastic verse for both our individual lives, and …our times, “For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.” I’m reminded that we serve a God who is “more than enough for me,” and you too!

2. Building Project Update – Here’s the latest information that we have…

- Plans were submitted to the City for approval about a month ago
and we are waiting for their response. Once they give us the “green
light”, we’ll be able to pull our building permits.

- Building costs continue to remain significantly lower than usual
because of the economy. It’s both a good time and a challenging time to build.

- We received District Approval for our bridge loan and for the
selling of the church properties

- God has given us some fantastic leaders that have been so willing
to lead in various key arenas of this building, such as:

* Dave Walborn and Tony Hill in the area of financial oversight

* Ken Robertson as the representative for the church in working with the contractor

* Ray Beaty in overseeing the properties getting sellable and listed

* Ron Ziebart as chair of our building committee

- Bids are coming in from a variety of sub contractors so that we
can really know the hard numbers as to what the building will actually cost. We have about 65% of these bids in. Once we know the total amount we will see how it compares to what we have in finances on hand and pledged. Depending whether or not there is a difference, we will come back to the congregation and determine what step to take next. I said on Sunday that we had over $4 million dollars committed, thinking that we had $4.3, however, I found out that it was right at $4 million dollars. So, we continue to have a ways to go in our giving.

Here’s where all of us come in:

We need everyone to participate in this project if this is going to happen.

Please clearly mark your Building Project giving so that it gets
routed to the right place. Building Project monies are to be above
and beyond our regular giving. It’s in the arena of sacrificial
giving.

And finally, we need to be giving as soon as possible. Our major
costs will be the most up front costs. The more money we have on hand at the beginning will position us the best.

3. Unique Men’s/Women’s Breakfast this Saturday - We are privileged to have a very special guest speaker, Andrea Westfall. She will be speaking about the experiences of those who have returned from serving in the Iraq war and ways that the church can effectively minister to those soldiers. Breakfast Time: 9:00 a.m. I hope you’ll take advantage of this special opportunity to have your heart encouraged and briefed on how we can make a difference.

4. Financial update from Pastor Jerry - BUILDING PROJECT: “I’ve not sent any updates recently as we’re fast approaching a very important meeting that should help us know how close we are to a ground-breaking moment. Here is a summary of the latest numbers that matter:

In the Building Reserves: 1.1 million

Pledges received to-date: 2.1 million

Anticipated capital from property sales: .8 million

Our last estimate for the completed project was 5.5 million. At this
moment the gap seems considerable; that’s what makes this upcoming meeting so important. We have people from within our church family working with builder and architect to find ways we can reduce cost. They’re working hard; they’re making real progress. I expect results to be encouraging, but there will still be need for some additional significant pledges. Keep praying! I believe the Lord will get us there.

BUDGETS FOR THE FIRST QUARTER: Here’s a summary of where we are as of June 30:

Income Received: (excludes Bldg. Project & special gifts): $389,285

Income Budgeted for this period: $419,285

Expenses To-Date: $404,855

Expenses Budgeted To-Date: $420,855

As you can see, we’re running 2% behind budget on income, and 1% under budget for expenses. This gives us a deficit of 15,569 as of June 30. While I’m waiting for the full July report I already know income was well beneath the budget. We continue to feel, as a church, what many of you are feeling as families – the ongoing effect of this current recession. We will continue to closely monitor our spending as we work our way through what is usually the leanest income time of the year - our summer months. Your prayers and continued faithfulness during this time are greatly appreciated. We are in the middle of some truly “God-sized” challenges this year. One thing we know for certain as it pertains to God’s priorities – the tithe remains sacred, something he intends for His “storehouse”. (Malachi 3)

What is the storehouse? The storehouse is where you receive your
ministry at a personal level. It’s the local church, where people
know you and your family. It’s those that call on you when sick, who
minister to you when hurting. It’s the pastor that will do your
funeral, as well as those of family and friends. No TV or radio
ministry will do that for you. No ministry in the world, no matter
how big or how great, will come and hold your new baby or preside over your wedding. That’s why God makes a distinction between tithes – the first 10% - and offerings, whatever else may be in your heart to give wherever you choose. The storehouse is your church family – where you live and where you worship. There is no substitute for it.”

Let me close by thanking you for staying faithful in your giving.
It’s what enables us to keep doing ministry full scale like we do
throughout the rest of the year. When you give, God uses you in a
powerful way to help His Church do His work. Thanks for your
generosity!

I’m looking forward to spending these August Sundays with you, because they are going to be great!

Truly Blessed By God,

Pastor Dave

Dear First Family,

As I sit here to write you
an update, I find myself wishing that I could just sit down with each
of you and visit with you personally. I’d tell you how much
the Lord loves you and remind you that He is for you. We
serve such an awesome God. His grace is more than sufficient for
you, and His mercies are new this very morning.

We’re rapidly approaching
the end of June and it’s been a great month around the church.
We have just completed one of the most outstanding weeks of Vacation
Bible School that we’ve ever had. The host of volunteers was
fantastic, and the amazing number of kids that attended was so inspiring.
Pastor Trevor and Ellen, along with their team of leaders were all used
by God to make a significant spiritual investment in some children and
provide them with a week that they’ll remember for many years to come.
Thanks for your support!

Plans have been submitted to
the city for our Extend The Vision Building Project.
We continue to take steps forward and are quickly approaching the time
when all of the talking, meetings and planning will result in the reality
of a new building being built. As I have shared previously, once
all of the financial numbers are in place, I will communicate with the
church family what those costs are, and then we can see the difference
between what we have pledged and raised, versus the true cost of the
project. In the meantime, we need all of us who have pledged toward
this project to be active in our giving. Once again, please be sure
to mark your building pledge clearly so it is directed to its
proper place. Make sure you’re keeping this one on your prayer
list!

Our summer service project
of taking on some projects in our neighborhood continues to be mapped
out. I will be bringing you the project and details soon. In the
meantime, I hope we are all striving to be great in the kingdom.
Let’s continue to serve the Lord, by serving others.

July is just around the corner.
Have you had a chance to get away for some much needed rest? I
hope you’ll make it a point to find some vacation time, even if it’s
short. Thanks for your incredible faithfulness. God uses
you more than you know. Please know that I’m praying for you
today.  Please keep the church in your prayers during these days;
especially be praying for our business owners, as well as those who
are in need of employment. Your prayers make such a difference.
I’ll see you Sunday!

Amazingly Graced,
